Recycling Rules

I don’t know why this is, but for some reason recycling is just hard for people. No one can seems to do it right. When recycling bottles, the plastic caps and the paper label must be removed, and any liquid inside must be dumped out before the bottle is thrown in the recycling bin. Fortunately, some companies, such as Coca-Cola are trying to make recycling easy for people.

Coca-Cola has become very active in recycling programs recently and is hoping to achieve to goal of recycling 100% of all plastic bottles. Not only are they working to recycle bottles, but water as well. They are working toward their goal with three objectives: reduce, recycle, replenish. They want to reduce the amount of water used to create each beverage, recycle the water used in their manufacturing processes so that it can be safely returned to the environment and replenish water in communities. They plan to do this through a global network of local partnerships and projects. The Coca-Cola/NRC Recycling Bin Grant program is now donating recycling bins to local organizations in hopes of “kick-starting” recycling bin programs across the country. They have been able to donate bins to schools, civic organizations and non-profits as well as many other businesses.

The National Recycling Company and the Coca-Cola Company have even started a competition to get people in the spirit of recycling! This competition targets colleges and universities. It allows them to compete against each other to see who can reduce, reuse and recycle the best, all while finding better ways to educate the campus on recycling and its impact on the environment.

Hopefully projects such as these will help people find simple and effective ways of helping the environment!

Today, everyone says that they are going green. But what does that really mean? Does that mean using 30% less plastic in Poland Spring bottles, buying reusable shopping bags or buying locally produced food? Well, Simple Shoes seems to know what being green really means.

Simple Shoes uses all recyclable materials to make their shoes. Their materials include hemp, organic cotton, recycled car tires, cork, 100% post consumer paper, inner tubes, wool, natural crepe rubber, eco certified leather and suede, silk bamboo and carpet padding. Things that each of us might not think about the recycled end result. Simple shoes for a happy planet are working to create 100% sustainability in their sneakers. They have a scale, which they call Green Toe, which measures their sustainability. The scale has three parts; good, better, best. Best means that they have achieved 100& sustainability, and even though they are not there they are getting very close.

Simple has also started a campaign called less>more; which is a call for all of those who are fed up with over-consumption to take action. Yes, they are eco-friendly, however are their shoes worth wearing.

I wear them and they are comfortable and look cool. .

Simple Shoes, check them out and tell me what you think.

Being "Green" and environmentally Savy is not hard, knowing what and where to look is all it takes.

Environmental friendly insulation is a growing trend in America. Materials such as wool, fiberglass, jeans (cotton) and mushroom spores are being used as environmentally safe insulation. How do jeans work for insulation you might ask? Well, before jeans can be used for insulation the are donated, collected and processed into their original fiber state of cotton. Once the natural cotton has been processed, it is used in the house to provide insulation as opposed to other extremely unenvironmental unfriendly material. The Cotton Industry partnered with others to create the “Blue to Green’ campaign. It collected over 14,500 pieces of denim that was recycled to insulated 12 homes for Habitat for Humanity. That means that it takes roughly about 1,214 jeans to insulate one house.

How do you know if your insulation is truly green? All manufactures with a “green” product must have their product certified by the Greenguard testing process. Once this is done, and the product has passed the test it gets it greenguard sticker and only low-emitting products that do not compromise the air quality of indoor environments are awarded this certification.

So…Does greener really work better? The Building Material Emissions Study concluded that products of recycled products perform at about the same quality as recycled. In regards to price, a few of these new insulation products are a bit pricier than the standard ones. However, one of the cheaper insulation products are denim. Bonded Logic, has developed an eco-friendly insulation that is made from 85% recycled denim leftovers. The leftovers found in the manufacturing cutting room floor, zero waste product and affordable.

Denim not only looks and feels great on you but also in your home!
